AGU’s GeoPolicy Connect is a solutions-focused initiative designed to foster relationships between different types of stakeholders, help communities, and advance science for policy and society. Through workshops bringing together scientists, policymakers, private sector experts, local community groups and others around science policy issues that matter to them—GeoPolicy Connect (GPC) helps to break down barriers between the sectors and creates recommendations to foster positive interactions in the future.
AGU, along with this year’s partners, will be hosting GPC 2017 in Pittsburgh, PA from 5 – 6 October.
Backstory of GeoPolicy Connect:
In 2015, AGU undertook research to understand the growing gap between science and policy. By talking with policymakers, scientists, and business leaders, we learned that each group appreciated the importance of the other, but lacked both the knowledge of how to talk to each other and the opportunities to do so. GeoPolicy Connect was launched to overcome those obstacles.
Value of GeoPolicy Connect:
In today’s complex world, tackling the biggest issues will require increased collaboration and new approaches to thinking. We can no longer operate within our own circles because communication barriers will impede progress.
That’s why the GeoPolicy Connect event is not just another day of listening to speakers. Instead, attendees work together to create a framework for more constructive engagement and decision-making on tough science policy issues. The goal of the events is not to have a set of specific policy recommendations, but to create the space for discussions that can break down barriers between the science, policy, private and public sectors in the future.
Ultimately, through the sharing of event information and outcomes, The issues raised in one workshop may help to inspire actions in other communities as well.
